Ingredient Spotlight: The Truth About #Talc✨
.
On my page, I generally try to focus on promoting safer ingredients and cosmetics instead of actively highlighting the dangers of harmful ones, but if I had to name one ingredient that certainly deserves the “red list” spotlight – it would be talc.
.
Talc is widely used in #babypowder and in fact that’s what I’m holding in my hands in these pictures. It’s also found in cosmetics, dry shampoo, deodorants, laundry soaps, vitamins and more. Now, it is important to note that although talc is, in fact, a natural compound, geologically, talc AND asbestos can be formed from the same parent rock! Even though talc deposits are not always contaminated with asbestos fibers, why would we as consumers or large corporations even risk it?
.
Asbestos is one of the most dangerous substances on Earth. From federal mortality data, EWG Action Fund estimated that up to 15,000 Americans die each year from asbestos-triggered diseases. The federal government says there is no safe level of asbestos exposure for any type of asbestos fiber and that even exposures as short in duration as a few days have caused mesothelioma in humans. (mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, heart, or abdomen)
.
Some good news? There are so many safe alternatives to talc for feminine hygiene use and plenty of makeup brands that don’t have it as an ingredient at all. Bad News? Most industry-leading cosmetics and personal care brands still use talc in their products without taking necessary precautions to put their consumers health first. And that is why today I’m partnering with @truthabouttalc to help spread awareness and ask you to join arms in signing their petition to #TosstheTalc – demanding companies like @jnj (Johnson & Johnson) to reevaluate their ingredient list and create products that are safe for everyone!
